Disco Diva

When Lauryn Hill hit the stage at Harry O’s in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival last month it was clear she’d been keeping her eye on the style pages. The soulful singer was a sight for sore eyes in an outfit which was screaming with retro seventies charm, making her style smack bang on trend for spring and summer 2011.

Working the trend in her own, undeniably over the top, way Lauren didn’t pull any punches when it came to choosing her on-stage outfit for the night. She teamed a blue button down shirt with a long flowing black skirt, topped off with a controversial fur coat that was cinched in with a colourful belt. The eccentric look was the perfect costume for the performed as she sang her way through her set.

Lauryn didn’t just stop with her choice of attire but continued the extravagant seventies style into her makeup. She looked like the perfect disco diva with boldly painted eye shadow in daring blocks of yellow gold and electric blue. To finish the look, Lauryn opted for an ultra dark lipstick and skipped the blush, ensuring that her bright eyes were the centre of attention.

ghd Ambassadors Favorite Looks

The ghd creative Ambassador team talk about their favorite Valentines
day style.

Craig Carter (NYC) =  When I think about Valentines Day I think about
Romance, when I think about Romance I think soft wavy hair.  My
favorite style for this is a ghd ribbon curl set then brushed out with
a boar bristle brush to minimize frizz. Then finish with ghd shining
serum for polish and shine.

Jodi Aucoin (La Jolla, CA) =   I think of old Hollywood Glamour,
styled with a soft, sexy finish.  With ghd styler and the Classic
Glamour Wave technique you can easily create this look. For a tighter
1940's look and appeal use the ghd 1/2" styler and brush out for a
soft finish.

Scott Ball (Orlando FL) =   I think of an upswept style with loosely
pulled up curls and a strong side swept bang that just dusts the
eyes.  Pull out random pieces to offer a disheveled, sexy finish.

Andy Bodine (Los Angeles, CA)  =  I love a very natural style, nothing
that is too sprayed or pinned. Something that brings out the inner
softness of a woman. Just a little polish and movement created with
the ghd styler in a matter of seconds.  Pull some up, leave some down,
add a small hair accessory to accent the clothes and that's it.
Simple, Soft and Sexy!!!

Get the SAG Awards looks!

Break out those ball gowns and airbrush tans, its awards season people!! And although few of us get to live the excitement of getting all dolled up and attending events such as the Golden Globes or SAG awards, we can certainly live vicariously through those that do. At least in the hair department, anyways. Three styles that seem to be ruling the red carpet this awards season:

1. Loose curls with movement as seen on Mila Kunis, Lea, Michele, and Julia Stiles at SAG awards

To achieve this style, towel dry the hair, then apply a quarter size amount of GHD Fat Hair lotion throughout the hair to enhance volume. Blow dry with a medium sized round brush. When dry, take 1-2 inch sections, mist with GHD Creation spray, and using the 1" Styler create vertical curls. As you work through the hair, vary which way you turn the styler and also how fast you pull the styler through each section. This will lead to a more natural look. When cooled, run fingers through the hair to separate the curls. Spray with GHD Sea Spray to exaggerate the resulting texture, and finish with GHD Ultimate Hairspray.

2. Pulled back Pony as seen on Amy Adams  at the SAG awards-

The base for any up-style is a flawless blow out. Achieve this by towel drying the hair, applying a nickel sized amount of GHD Obedience Cream through it, and blow drying it with a medium sized round brush. When finished, pull the hair back into a ponytail and attach with an elastic. Pull a small piece of hair out and wrap it around the pony to hide the elastic. Use a bobby pin to hold that in place. Use a 1" GHD styler to smooth the ponytail and finish with a light mist of GHD Ultimate Hairspray.

3. Retro Up-Do as seen on Natalie Portman and January Jones at SAG awards

Again, towel dry the hair and apply GHD Fat Hair Lotion to build volume. For thinner hair, layer on a second application of the product. Apply GHD Obedience Cream to mid lengths and ends of the hair to diminish frizz and give a smooth blow dry. Part hair and low dry with a medium sized round brush. When dry, mist GHD Creation Spray over the entire head and run your fingers through the hair to distribute it evenly. Using the 1" styler curl the top half of the hair, pin, and let cool. Pull the back into a smooth twist and secure with booby pins. Unpin the top, use GHD Polishing serum on the ends of the hair, and incorporate into style. Finish with GHD Ultimate Hairspray.
